WORD OF THE DAY
Intersectionality
[ in-ter-sek-shuh-nal-i-tee ]
The reality that we all have multiple identities that intersect to make us who we are; provides a means through which to discuss oppressions and privileges that overlap and reinforce each other. Originally coined by activist and scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw, who used the term to describe how one must work to understand how both racism and sexism function, interact together, and amplify one another, in order to understand how Black women experience oppression.
